Lt. John Hamilton Shaw

( b. Feb 16, 1843 - d. Nov. 24, 1916)

Shaw, a Civil War hero,

had charge of Fort Slocum, one of about 700 forts surrounding Washington, D.C. when Lincoln was shot. He was captured at Bull Run, escaped Andersonville Prison, and later rejoined Union forces to fight at Gettysburg where he was severely wounded, nearly blinded they said, when a shell knocked him from his horse. I have seen an armored breastplate with a sizeable dent in it, said to have been caused by a Confederate bullet. I think it is owned by the Leila Holden Family. Nana Burt was born some 22 years later in 1886.

So far as I know Great-Grandfather Shaw did not work to support his large family after the War, but rather was supported by his older brother Henry.
