Surgeons and scheduling nurses called the laser rental company's dispatcher, who wrote the request on a magnetic strip and transferred it to a wall calendar. The dispatcher then called a Technician to assign the case. After confirming with the Technician, the dispatcher FAX'd the customer back, and then called them to confirm the request. Often, the confirmations had to wait until voicemail messages were listened to and responded to. Changes or cancellations required another round of calls. All clients received reconfirming Faxes at the end of each week whether they had cases scheduled or not. If the magnetic board was disturbed, events could be lost or even changed by mistake. Finally, the event was entered into a computerized calendar by the dispatcher.
